In the world of the waterman or waterwoman, there is a certain ideal. The sea is always blue. The wind is always offshore. The fish are always thick. The waves are always pumping. And the water is always warm. But conditions on our sandbar rarely qualify as ideal. The wind can blow onshore for a week, making a mess of the surf and making paddling impossible. The waves can go flat.
