The story of Tucker’s Island seems to be one of trial and error, success and failure. As the people of Tuckerton petitioned the federal government for a lighthouse on the island, the U.S. government decided to create a detailed map of the waters around LBI. In 1839 an expedition was sent out from New York. Twenty-seven-year-old midshipman Benjamin F. Sands was assigned to do the preliminary surveys for the maps.

He decided to take his wife and young child with him since it was to be an extended project.
