Following Superstorm Sandy in 2012, some Holgate residents noticed the area’s dunes that had been covered solely with dune grass “were obliterated by the wave action” of the hurricane-riled ocean, Holgate Taxpayers Association President Rand Pearsall explained.

“We also saw that some dunes held; perhaps not surprisingly, these dunes were heavily vegetated.”
