Mozart and soul/funk music legend Frankie Beverly will be celebrated at Stockton University’s Performing Arts Center in early November. The Bay Atlantic Symphony Orchestra will take the stage at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1 to present a program titled “Mozart-Mania!”
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s most sublime expressions – from his resplendent and joyful Symphony No. 39 to his intense, personal and confessional Requiem – spill out from the stage and envelop the audience. Symphony musicians are joined by a quartet of vocal soloists including soprano Jennifer Casey Cabor, mezzo soprano Taylor Hilary Boikins, tenor Min Jim and bass Jim Williams and the always impressive 130-member Greater South Jersey Chorus.
The symphony’s music director, Jed Gaylin, will give an enlightening and entertaining talk one hour before the concert.
Tickets are $45 for the general public, $35 for youth 17 years of age and younger, $36 for alumni, $40 for faculty and staff, and $12 for Stockton students. They may be purchased online at stockton.universitytickets.com.
At 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6 an eight-piece tribute band called “We Are One” will replicate the look, sound, and feelings of the BET (Black Entertainment Television) Lifetime Achievement Award 70’s soul and funk group Maze.
The band will especially pay tribute to Frankie Beverly, who founded the group then called Raw Soul, in Philadelphia in 1970. The band moved to San Francisco in 1976 and hooked up with Marvin Gaye, who suggested they change its name and took it on as one of his opening acts on the road.
Beverly had a wide vocal range and was also blessed with that important but unteachable trait for a performer – charisma. Luckily, We Are One is blessed with a lead singer, Paul Bumbry, who has an amazing range and physical movement of his lifelong idol, Beverly. Toss in the group’s leader and national recording drummer ELWarren “Spoon” Weatherspoon and it should be quite the show.
Tickets are $45 for the general public, $43 for seniors and members of the military, $25 for youth 17 years of age and younger, $40 for alumni, $38 for faculty and staff, $12 for Stockton students and $36 for groups of 10 and more. Once again, they may be purchased online at stockton.universitytickets.com.
