The announcement came just before Halloween: SwellColors Glass Studio will close its Surf City location mid-December. The lease is ending on the storefront and the building has been sold, gallery owner and glass artist Mary Tantillo said. She held a farewell party and art sale on Saturday for friends and collectors and is selling everything she can at the gallery and online.
She is not closing her business, however, and has hinted at taking her operation back to its roots, in her North Beach garage.
“We will still be working as artists and focusing on custom and other really exciting projects,” she said. “As we move on to our next chapter, we will be closing officially by mid-December and have to be out by Jan 1.”
The 2,900-square-foot building at 1715 Long Beach Blvd. in Surf City sold for $1.43 million on Sept. 15.

Crêperie de la Mer & French Café in Beach Haven has permanently closed after 10 seasons in business. Owners John and Nadia Albright announced in May their plans to close at the end of the summer. The 115-year-old building at 210 North Beach Ave. was originally Charlie Cranmer’s Grocery, a symbol of Beach Haven’s early-20th-century character. The property was listed at $2.7 million in May but was taken off the market in September.
