One word immediately came to mind while taking in Surflight Theatre’s current musical production, “Hoagy Carmichael’s Stardust Road”: smooth.

ALL THAT JAZZ: Surflight Theatre’s production of ‘Hoagy Carmichael’s Stardust Road’ is only the second time the off-Broadway show, which follows the life of jazz musician Hoagy Carmichael, has been produced. (Photo by John Posada)

Smooth as a baby’s bottom. Smooth as an Olympic figure skating rink. Smooth as a perfect airplane landing. Smooth.

How could it not be when the show is based on the music of Carmichael, the king of Tinpan Alley in the 1930s, who later went to Hollywood and in 1951 won the Best Original Song for “In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening”?

“Hoagy Carmichael’s Stardust Road” is more of a revue, or even a cabaret act, than the typical book musical.
