In 1867, Joseph Stannah began manufacturing cranes and hoists for the busy London docks, later expanding to include passenger and goods lifts. Eventually, according to Bruce Lorange, head of Marketing North America for Stannah Stairlifts Inc., the company “became one of the world’s leading stairlift manufacturers. Stannah entered the stairlift market in 1975 and has since helped more than 1 million people worldwide regain greater independence in their homes.”
