Sports clichés: give 110 percent, get on the same page, play one game at a time. In Southern Regional football’s 41-6 loss to Brick Township, one particular cliché came to mind: the score was closer than it appeared. Well, this was the case for the first half.

Down 14-0 in the first quarter, captain Zac Halliday ran back a kickoff for 30 yards. Southern began its drive at its own 34-yard line. On a third-and-seven play, running back Ryan Winkler caught a tough 13-yard pass for the first down. Two plays later, running back Pat Walker broke free for another 34 yards.

With two monster plays, the Rams found themselves at Brick’s 14-yard line.
