Free dune grass bundles are now available to Beach Haven residents through the Ocean County Road Department.

Steve Letts, public works superintendent, said the borough has 120 bundles totaling 1,200 plantings. They will be available for pickup at the public works building at 300 Amber St. (behind borough hall), which is open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Residents should call the office at 609-492-2525 before picking them up. Residents will also get a list of suggested areas for planting and receive directions for successful planting.

Dune grass is a natural method of protection for coastal communities, as the plants quickly trap migrating sand and build a natural barrier to storm waves. Once the plant material is established, it requires no watering or fertilizer.

Because dune grass is a cool-season plant, the best planting times are in the fall.

“The plantings are done along the dunes by the street ends,” said Letts. “We encourage homeowners to take advantage of this free service.”
