To the Editor:

A decade or so ago I was driving past Trenton and stopped to get a bottle of water at a convenience store. Just ahead of me checking out were two boys, no more than 9 or 10, struggling to find enough change to pay for their candy. I reached over their heads and handed a bill to the cashier for water and candy. They jumped up and down with happiness and many thanks. At that time I hadn’t heard the expression “pay it forward.”
