Editor’s Note: The following essay was originally published in The Beachcomber in 1993, and its reflections seem even more pertinent today.

I’m mildly surprised when I reflect on the fact that I’ve been fishing for about 60 years of my life, which is more than somewhat, as Damon Runyon might say. Anything that has held one’s attention for that length of time seems worthy of reflection, indeed, almost demands it – an unexamined life and all that. What is it about fishing that has kept me in its thrall?
