Christmas magic arrived early for the Surf City Volunteer Fire Co. and EMS, and while Santa or some of his elves haven’t delivered new turnout gear yet, the real gift this holiday season is the thermal protection of the gear.

Peter Hartney, fire company president, said the new equipment, which includes coats, boots, hoods and gloves, still needs to be delivered. It was purchased using $37,000 in funding from the 2023 New Jersey American Rescue Plan grant for firefighters. The grant funded the purchase of 10 full sets of gear.

Hartney, also a Surf City borough councilman, said the fire company has applied for additional funding from the 2024 grant process.
