In May 1841, newspapers across the country ran stories about the return of the Barnegat Pirates when a Gloucester, Mass., fishing boat, Neptune, came upon the sinking schooner Mogul off LBI. When boarded on May 12, the Mogul was found to be deserted. There appeared to be a body in the flooded captain’s cabin, and several holes had been drilled into the hull of the sinking vessel.
