To the Editor:
I would like to commend Mayor John Imperiale for his excellent commentary, “Mundane Maintenance Needed for Good Government” (10/21).
Often, good governance simply means good maintenance. The mayor’s message regarding project prioritization is clear: Mundane infrastructure projects are just as important – if not more so – than “sexy,” large-scale projects. While the latter may get the press clippings, basic infrastructure improvements are far too vital to ignore.
As a tourist community that relies on high visitation volumes to support our economy and local businesses, everyday maintenance is critical. As the mayor suggested, no visitor or resident is going to cut a ribbon or applaud routine upkeep. However, those same visitors and residents are deeply appreciative when potholes are fixed, parks are well maintained, beaches are raked and well guarded, trash is picked up timely, and streets are cleanly swept. They notice when sanitation and public works departments are responsive, and when code enforcement operates efficiently.
Professional, responsive governance is the ultimate endorsement of good government. For this taxpayer, that kind of government has my applause.
