The preliminary cause of death of a young fin whale that washed ashore deceased in Barnegat Light on Feb. 20 is consistent with a suspected vessel strike. The whale, which was buried on the beach, also showed signs of previous trauma from entanglement.
“Various biological samples were collected and will be sent for further histopathologic analysis,” the Marine Mammal Stranding Center said following the Feb. 21 animal necropsy.
