To the Editor:
I attended Jim Ulrich’s meet-and-greet Friday evening and appreciated the opportunity to speak with him personally and learn more about his candidacy for mayor of Ship Bottom and his experience in municipal government.
Jim confirmed that he has been a property owner and taxpayer in Ship Bottom for 20 years and a full-time resident and registered voter for the past seven years. He discussed his background as a business administrator, including his experience securing grants, managing municipal budgets and working directly with state government agencies. He also spoke about the relationships he has developed with contacts in those agencies over the years, explaining that they know him and take his calls. It was particularly interesting to hear how his professional responsibilities relate to the challenges facing a community like Ship Bottom.
What stood out to me was his familiarity with the day-to-day operations of local government. Hearing him speak firsthand gave me a better understanding of the experience he would bring to the mayor’s office and how that experience could help him begin addressing Ship Bottom’s needs and priorities from day one. This professional insight is particularly relevant because Ship Bottom, like the other municipalities on LBI and many small towns throughout New Jersey, has a part-time mayoral position. Jim also explained that the Ship Bottom position carries an annual stipend of $7,000.
I am glad I had the opportunity to attend, ask questions and learn more about Jim’s background firsthand. When choosing our next leader, facts, transparency and a proven track record of real municipal management must come first. Based on everything I have learned, it is clear that experience matters. That is why I will be voting for Jim Ulrich for mayor of Ship Bottom.
