To the Editor:

Sometimes the most inspiring examples of community spirit come from our youngest citizens.

My cousin’s grandson, Kevin, is only 13 years old. When he heard that the St. Francis Community Food Pantry was in need of donations, he didn’t just think about it; he decided to do something.

Kevin called me and asked if he could organize a community service project in his neighborhood to help the pantry. He created his own flyer, distributed it to homes throughout his neighborhood, and asked his neighbors to donate food.

His efforts were remarkable. This past week, Kevin collected eight full bags of groceries and brought them to the food pantry. As his family, we are incredibly proud of him. It is so rewarding to see a young person recognize that others are in need and take the initiative to help. Kevin didn’t wait for someone else to organize a food drive. He saw a need, came up with an idea, and took action.

His story is also a reminder of how much good can happen when people come together to help their neighbors. I wish more children – and, quite honestly, more adults – would consider taking on community service projects like Kevin’s. There are so many organizations and families in our community that could use a helping hand.

Kevin’s food drive may have started with just one 13-year-old and a flyer, but it resulted in eight bags of food reaching people who need it.

Thank you, Kevin, for showing us that you are never too young to make a difference. I hope your example inspires others in our community to look around, see a need, and ask “What can I do to help?”
