Do you ever wonder where all the circus elephants have gone? The Ringling Bros. Circus I attended in Philadelphia that enchanted me as a child has long since disbanded the elephant shows, retiring the few creatures who traveled with them. There is a strong global environmental movement to preserve and protect the remaining elephant population.

Part of that movement includes activists who celebrate the world’s largest land mammal on World Elephant Day Aug. 12.
