One of the interesting aspects of studying history is that when you search to find out the why for a question, it inevitably can trigger a “what if” discussion. Why is Long Beach Island so different from most of the Jersey Shore?

The question was asked when it was pointed out that a Google search of how to get from Barnegat Light to Island Beach State Park, 1 mile away, says 51 miles, taking one hour and 10 minutes without summer traffic.

The obvious answer is because of bridges, and with that our story begins.
