Beach Haven recently took down its advisory warning that the public stay off the beaches due to severe damage from the late-September nor’easter.
“The beaches look really good, as good as they can be,” said Borough Clerk Sherry Mason.
After the storm, the situation looked rather overwhelming for public works as steep drop-offs were found at each beach entrance from one end of town to the other. The borough had three tractors, but no bulldozer, which would be needed for the heavy duty task ahead.
Beach Haven rented one bulldozer from a company, but more would be needed. Mason said the borough then entered into a shared service agreement with Long Beach Township for two bulldozers.
“Long Beach has several bulldozers,” said Mason. “They had just finished fixing up the beaches in Holgate, so they had equipment available. After having discussions with Long Beach, we worked out this agreement.”
Mason said the cost to the borough was $2,000 a day for each bulldozer, which came with their own operators.
“We used them for five days,” she said. “That’s what we needed to get it all done.” —E.E.
