Roughly a month prior to his 18th birthday, Jason Groome’s childhood dreams have become reality. After Groome’s agent, Jeff Randazzo, and the Boston Red Sox agreed to terms on July 14, the 17-year-old left-handed pitcher from Barnegat signed with the franchise the next day, putting pen to contract from the kitchen of his family’s home.
Groome was selected 12th overall by the Red Sox in last month’s amateur draft, and the team had until July 15 to sign him.
