There’s nothing like an off-season morning on Long Beach Island, driving along Long Beach Boulevard and watching the traffic lights – turned off until the next Memorial Day – gently moving in the alternating Atlantic Ocean and Manahawkin Bay breezes. This could be anywhere, small-town USA, quiet, peaceful, one of the reasons I originally bought a place down on the Jersey Shore.

I lived on Mill Creek Road, and a friend of mine, Danny, an old Army buddy, lived around the corner on Albert Drive.
