Shane Stauffer had a decent lead coming around the final turn of the Swim Relay but decided to do something a little different, rather than simply swim toward the shore. He swam backward so he could meet up with a wave.
“Yeah, I’m a lifeguard, but I don’t swim every day,” Stauffer said, almost tongue in cheek, after the host Surf City Beach Patrol captured the top spot in the 20th annual Epic Lifeguard Tournament on June 30. “I swim when I have to, when I need to make a rescue.
