On the back end of Hurricane Erin, under a sunny blue sky, past the bar and north jetty of Barnegat Inlet, the storm could still be seen and felt as nearly 16-foot waves broke over two 47-foot motor lifeboats from Coast Guard Station Barnegat Light on Aug. 22.

“It’s great to get our trainees to see that,” Petty Officer Tim Mirandi, who certified as a surfman at Barnegat Light nearly three years ago, said after the nearly two-hour training ended.
