Barnegat Lighthouse State Park posted some exciting news on social media earlier this month: “The skimmers are back, and it’s being called a historic moment.”
As Vincent Grassi, press officer for the N.J. Department of Environmental Protection, explained, “Black skimmers were observed nesting in the Barnegat Light Restoration Area this year and, for the first time in nearly 30 years, they fledged young. In 2021, the birds attempted to nest there but did not hatch or fledge any chicks.
