For years, surviving a heart attack on Long Beach Island began with a phone call and a helicopter. Dr. James Orlando, an interventional cardiologist, remembers how it worked.

A patient arrived at Southern Ocean County Hospital (now Southern Ocean Medical Center) in Manahawkin, an electrocardiogram confirmed a heart attack in progress, and the hospital called the interventional cardiologist on call. Often that was Orlando, at home in Toms River.
